Cake Sizes and Serves

"How many people does a cake serve?"

cake sizes and serves

Before you make your cake, to work out what size the cake should be, you will need to consider the number of guests itneeds to serve and how the cake will be served.

The number of cake serves you get from a particular cake size will depend on a few things...
  • Is the cake round or square? You will get more serves from a square cake

  • Will the cake be served as dessert, or to go with coffee? A coffee-sized piece will be smaller than a dessert-sizedone (see below)

  • Will the cake cutting be done by a professional caterer? A professional will usually be able to get moreserves out of the cakes than I have listed below, but these numbers will give you a good guide

  • What height will the cake be and what is it made of? My cakes are usually finished to a height of 4" and filledwith rich ganache, so even small cake portions are quite rich (and delicious)

  • The corners of the cake are not usually served because they often have too much icing and not enough cake in the serve

  • If the cake has several tiers some cake is lost because of the internal structural poles

  • A coffee sized cake portion is 1" x 1"
