It can be used as your favourite chocolate cake filling, or as a chocolate icing recipe for your muffins and cupcakes. It is a great standby recipe as it requires very little effort to make.

I have started including variations of this frosting, coffee, banana ... so keep ready down the page.

Please read through my chocolate frosting recipe first before starting.

2 tablespoons (40ml) milk

Method.

  1. Place all ingredients into a small bowl of an electric mixer. Turn on slow speed until just combined.
  2. Beat on high speed for 5mins.
  3. Stop and scrape down the beaters and bowl twice during this stage. Just to let you know the cream will darken in colour on standing.

Now you know why I call this recipe quick and easy.

Do you need inspiration for ways to use this fabulous frosting recipe? Like with all my recipes I like to give you a base then show you simple variations.

Chocolate Coffee Frosting

chocolate coffee frosting Delicious and simple using the frosting recipe increase the icing sugar to 2 cups. Do not use the milk instead dissolve 1 tablespoon of instant coffee powder in 2 tablespoons of boiling water (let cool first). I have used it here to make a chocolate coffee cake the recipe can be found under chocolate cakes. If you love coffee liqueur 1 tablespoon of your favourite can also be added!

Easy Banana Frosting

easy banana frosting Ok for this variation leave out the cocoa powder and milk and increase the icing sugar to 2 cups, use 1/4 cup of mashed banana and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. You will be suprised at the lovely banana flavour this frosting has. And if you would like the recipe for these chocolate banana muffins head to my chocolate muffin pages.

Easy Vanilla Frosting

valentine day chocolate muffin Sometimes it is nice to add a bit of colour to your chocolate cakes. This version of the chocolate cake frosting is actually the original. Use 250g unsalted butter, 2 cups icing sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix the same way as for the chocolate icing. To celebrate Valentines Day I coloured this with a few drops of food safe pink colour and used it to top my double chocolate muffins.
